Here are some of the 8th graders in action from the construction fair.

Wow! Where has the time gone! Summer has passed and we quickly jump right in to the fall season. Students are hard at work in math classes brushing up on their order of operation and problem solving skills. They are all working hard on explaining their work when they complete a word problem. Students can often find the correct answer, but can they tell you what they did and why they did it? This is something many students struggle with and need daily practice to make it easier to explain their math in words. We will continue to do these explanations in all of our math studies each week.
6th Grade Math- We have just finished studying decimals and all operations involving decimals. We will be entering into integers this week. This is a fancy word for positive and negative numbers. They will be identifying words that represent positives and negative. They will also be graphing on a number line and learning how to compare/order integers. 7th Grade Math: They are finishing up their study of integers and the coordinate plane. They have created some neat pictures using only points and lines. Next for the 7th grade will be fractions- GCF, LCM, and all operations. 8th Grade Math: The 8th graders enjoyed their field trip to learn about the construction industry. The hands on field trip allowed students the opportunity to operate a jackhammer, raise/lower a scoop on a tractor, and wire a light bulb, just to name a few activities. They walked away with a lot of useful information on what a career in these fields require. In the classroom, they will begin comparing rational vs. irrational numbers. This unit will take a closer look at fractions, decimals, and whole numbers and how they can be changed between each other. 6th Grade: We are finishing up a challenging unit of multiplying and dividing decimals. Next we work with order of operations. A test over this material will be towards the end of the week.
7th Grade: They have started integrating positive and negative numbers into the order of operations, also known as PEMDAS. This will lead to them working on the coordinate plane, plotting points and creating pictures using the coordinate plane. 8th Grade: The 8th graders are working on mean, median, mode, and range. They will be able to find the next score of a test to determine what they need to get an A or B. They will be attending the Construction Fair at the Expo Gardens in Peoria on Friday, September 27. They will be learning about the skills and education needed to enter the labor forces- construction, masonry, painting, electrician, etc. Fantasy Football is all the rage right now. It seems everywhere you look, someone is talking about fantasy football. This year some of our jr. high students and their teachers decided to form a fun league. We meet on Wednesdays after school until 3:45. During this time, we help set lineups for the week, participate in some football activity, math/science activity, and eat snacks. Our kids have had a good time learning about this popular activity.
Week 1: Congratulations to the Addition All Stars for winning the first week of the season. Congratulations goes out to Ataya's Adding Team for posting the largest margin of victory for the week as her team beak the Tungsten Tacklers by almost 100 points. (Sorry Mrs. Baker!) Week 2: The Addition All Stars continue to lead the league with a 2-0 record. Great Job Dalton! He also had the largest margin of victory over the Tungsten Tacklers. Week 3: The Addition All Stars are still leading the league in points. There are only 3 undefeated teams left in the league. Atomic Butter and Ciara's Pi Punchers are also 3-0. Who will be victorious in Week 2? Good luck! Week of September 16, 2013It's hard to believe we are starting Week 5 of the school year! Time sure is going by fast! The students have been hard at work sharpening their basic math skills while gearing up to learn new math skills. All three classes have started working on their problem solving strategies. This is a challenging task for some as all students are expected to explain their work. Do you know the 5-step problem solving plan? Ask your student to explain it to you.
6th Grade: We are working on multiplying and dividing decimals. They will be identifying and defining the three types of decimals: terminating, non-terminating, and repeating. They will be adding order of operations to their studies as well. 7th Grade: They have started order of operations, also known as PEMDAS. In addition, they are working on integers (positive/negative numbers). They will be performing all operations with the signed numbers. This will lead to them working on the coordinate plane, plotting points. 8th Grade: The 8th graders are finishing up their first unit studying algebraic expressions, integers, order of operation, properties, and exponents. They will have a unit test this week. Keep working hard Panthers! |
